Keyboard shortcuts settings

The keyboard shortcuts tab can be used to specify keyboard shortcuts, i.e., to specify what happens when you press a key in the Locate32 dialog. You can also specify global keys which works also when Locate32 dialog is not activated (e.g. global Win-F to open Locate32 dialog).

Shortcuts list

To specify new shortcut, click New button on top, specify which key want to assign using fields in Shortcut group and specify an action (multiple actions are also allowed) for the shortcut using fields in Action group (fields in these groups are described below). To adjust the settings of existing shortcut, select the shortcut from the list and use options in Shortcut and Action groups. To remove already specified shortcuts, select the shortcut from the list and press Remove button. The order of keyboard shortcuts can be adjusted using Up and Down buttons. The default keyboard shortcuts can be loaded using Reset button.

Shortcut group

This group contains the fields which can be used to the key to be assigned.

Key and Virtual Key: The easiest way to enter a key is to choose the Key check box and press a key given compination when the field on the right of the Key check box is focused. Then a pressed key should appear in this field.

This way does not work for all key compinations. For example, you can't use keys Enter or Esc this way, because these keys will close the settings dialog. For such keys you can use Virtual Key check box and specify a virtual key for key compination. In princible, the virtual key is a numeric value between 0-255, but you can also choose predefined virtual keys using the dropdown list of the field. You can also key, say, A by typing "A". When you specify a key using a virtual key, you can use Ctrl, Alt, Shift and Win check boxes to specify key combination.

From Mnemonic: In Windows applications you can typically select a control in a dialog using Alt with a key which is corresponds to a letter which is underlined in the label (you may need to press Alt to see this). For example, "Named" field (N is underlined) can be chosen using pressing Alt-N (English version only). Such letters are called as mnemonics. When From Mnemonic option for the shortcut is chosen, the key used for the shortcut is the mnemonic (with Alt) associated to chosen action. This check box is enabled only if the chosen action is "Activate control" with some control which has a mnemonic.

Pressed when: This group of options can be used to specify situations when the shortcut is effective. For example, you can specify a shortcut which works only when the focus is in the results list by enabling "Focus in the results list" option and disabling "Focus not in the result list" option. Furthermore, if you want to specify a key which works only if focus is in Size and Date tab, enable options "Focus not in the results list" and "Size and data tab shown" and disable options "Focus in the results list", "Name tab shown" and "Advanced tab shown".

Advanced: This button opens a dialog which contains more options related to the keyboard shortcut. These options are mainly used to specify global keys which works also when Locate32 dialog is not open. See Advanced settings (Keyboard shortcuts).
